The Evidence — Scholarship Facts

What is actually possible with the right preparation?

Real scholarship data from real universities — so families can make informed decisions about their child's academic future.

The examples below show upper-end possibilities at especially generous universities — not guaranteed outcomes for every student. Sources and links are provided for every claim.

Three numbers every family should know

$70,000+
Total value of National Merit Finalist packages at the most generous US universities — covering tuition, housing, and stipends over four years
$28,000
Per year in automatic merit aid available to high-scoring students at select public universities — especially for out-of-state applicants
Grade 7
Is when this program starts — because the qualifying PSAT/NMSQT happens in Grade 11, and students need 3–4 years to build the foundation to score competitively

Up to $70,000+ over four years

Some universities offer extraordinarily generous packages to National Merit Finalists — covering tuition, housing, and additional stipends. Here are three documented examples with sources.

University of Alabama $70,000+ total value

The National Merit Finalist package at Alabama includes:

  • Full tuition for up to 5 years (10 semesters)
  • 4 years of on-campus housing
  • $4,000 per year supplemental scholarship for 4 years
  • $2,000 one-time research or international study allowance

When tuition and housing are combined over multiple years, the total value readily exceeds $70,000.

Up to $28,000 per year for strong SAT scores

Some public universities publish automatic, stats-based merit scholarships — awarded purely on GPA and test score thresholds, with no separate scholarship application required.

University of Alabama — Automatic Merit Aid Up to $28,000 / year

Alabama's automatic out-of-state merit scholarships are tiered by GPA and SAT/ACT score. The highest tier reaches $28,000 per year for qualifying students.

  • Awarded automatically — no separate scholarship application
  • Available to out-of-state students meeting GPA and test score thresholds
  • Tiers begin at lower score ranges — strong scores increase award amount

Important context

The $28,000/year figure represents the upper end of published automatic awards — not a guaranteed outcome for every student. At the booth, our team can explain what score ranges are needed for each tier, and how our program builds toward those scores from Grade 7 onward.

The PSAT/NMSQT happens in Grade 11 — the clock starts now

The National Merit Scholarship competition is entered through the PSAT/NMSQT — and only the score earned in 11th grade counts. Earlier tests (PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10) do not qualify students for National Merit. This means preparation must begin years before junior year.

Gr 7–8
Foundation — Math and English
Build strong algebra, reading comprehension, and grammar fundamentals. This is the base that everything else rests on. Students who start here have the most runway.
Gr 9–10
Acceleration — PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10
These tests do not qualify for National Merit but are excellent practice and progress benchmarks. Students deepen problem-solving skills and begin exam-format practice.
Gr 11
The Qualifying Test — PSAT/NMSQT
This is the test that counts. Only 11th grade PSAT/NMSQT scores are used to determine National Merit Semifinalist status. Students who have prepared since Grade 7 arrive here with a multi-year advantage.
Gr 11–12
SAT / ACT and Scholarship Applications
Strong SAT scores unlock automatic merit scholarships at hundreds of universities. National Merit Finalists begin their scholarship applications and college selection.

The official source

According to College Board, students must take the PSAT/NMSQT during their third year of high school (Grade 11) to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only the score earned in junior year counts toward National Merit eligibility.
