Real scholarship data from real universities — so families can make informed decisions about their child's academic future.
The examples below show upper-end possibilities at especially generous universities — not guaranteed outcomes for every student. Sources and links are provided for every claim.
Some universities offer extraordinarily generous packages to National Merit Finalists — covering tuition, housing, and additional stipends. Here are three documented examples with sources.
The National Merit Finalist package at Alabama includes:
When tuition and housing are combined over multiple years, the total value readily exceeds $70,000.
afford.ua.edu/scholarships/national-meritThe University of Oklahoma publishes an official National Merit Finalist Package PDF that explicitly lists the Resident Total value — including tuition waivers, stipends, and housing support.
Texas A&M packages National Merit awards ranging from $13,000 to $43,000 over 4 years of undergraduate study, depending on the specific award tier.
Some public universities publish automatic, stats-based merit scholarships — awarded purely on GPA and test score thresholds, with no separate scholarship application required.
Alabama's automatic out-of-state merit scholarships are tiered by GPA and SAT/ACT score. The highest tier reaches $28,000 per year for qualifying students.
The $28,000/year figure represents the upper end of published automatic awards — not a guaranteed outcome for every student. At the booth, our team can explain what score ranges are needed for each tier, and how our program builds toward those scores from Grade 7 onward.
The National Merit Scholarship competition is entered through the PSAT/NMSQT — and only the score earned in 11th grade counts. Earlier tests (PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10) do not qualify students for National Merit. This means preparation must begin years before junior year.
According to College Board, students must take the PSAT/NMSQT during their third year of high school (Grade 11) to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only the score earned in junior year counts toward National Merit eligibility.
